Jessica Wehrman in our Washington Bureau is reporting that Sen. Rob Portman is starting the year by touting a fundraising record in his campaign for a second term in the U.S. Senate.
Portman, R-Ohio, said Wednesday that his campaign raised $9.8 million in 2015 – a fundraising record for the off-year in Ohio and the most of any targeted Senate campaign this year. He raised $2.1 million in the fourth quarter, which ended Dec. 31, and has more than $12 million cash on hand.
The report hasn’t been publicly released yet, but according to the campaign, 80 percent of the donors who gave during the fourth quarter were from Ohio. In 2015 overall, 76 percent of donors were Ohioans, according to the campaign.
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat who is opposing Portman, has yet to release his numbers. Nor has Democratic Cincinnati City Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, who is also challenging Portman.
